Western Writer's Conference

I'm in the final third of my month long trips, and am in Springfield, Mo. This is the conference where I get to see old friends, publishers, and everyone else in my business of western writing. This photo was taken at the WWA conference, my good friends, Debi Morgan, me, and Deb's hubby, the illustrious, Loren Estelman.

Last night, I had drinks with a pretty neat group, and I will drop names. I spent some time with my good friend, Debi Morgan who writes some pretty neat fiction, the illustrious Dr. Paul Hutton, his lovely wife, Tracy, Loren Estleman, Johnny Boggs, Michael Gear, Rita Cleary, and some others who I know I should remember. Most of these people are pretty famous western writers. It's hard to imagine that 10 years ago I only knew them by their names on a book cover. Today, I get to rub elbows with them!

I'm skipping the panel this morning so I can work on my real job as a marketing writer. Later today we are all heading for a mass book signing at a local Borders. Anyone in the area should come by - this is a chance to meet over 50 pretty darn famous western authors - all in one place.

Filming in Deadwood

Wow! That's all I can say.

I got back from Deadwood last night after filming for the series, Lost Worlds on the History Channel. This has to be one of the best experiences I have ever had. I was a little apprehensive about all this, but that changed quickly.

I met the film crew, Oli (Director/Producer), Tom (Associate Producer), Peter (cameraman), Rick (sound guy), and Chris (runner). They were tops to work with, and total professionals. We became good friends in a few short, but long days, and I am sorry that I had to leave so soon. Maybe we'll get to work together on more projects.

There's so much to tell. We spent about 12 hours each day filming all over Deadwood. I learned so much about that town, and I suppose those who view it will, too! Hard to imagine that we have about 48 hours of film of my part, and that will all boil down to about 30 minutes (if I'm lucky).

The guys said I did a terrific job, and that I was "brilliant" - imagine that in a British accent, since they are from London. I kept hankering for a Guinness! That darn commercial...

The town was crawling with people and most stopped to watch and takes pictures of us filming. The convention of mid-western governors was in Deadwood while I was there and the governor of Montana came up and introduced himself to me and Tom. Pretty aweswome when the governor is stopping you to say hello!!!

There was no script for me to read. Oli simply told me what points he wanted covered and I just did my thing...since I have a smart ass sense of humor, that's what they got. They seemed pretty happy with it.

It should air in the fall, maybe September or October, but I will definately post it here when I know for sure.

Well, I am heading to Springfield MO for the Western Writer's Conference on Thursday to give a talk and meet with my publishers.

On the Road

Wow! I have one-third of my month long travel days behind me. Larry and I got back from Tombstone on May 31. We were supposed to be back on the 30th, but we got stuck in Houston overnight. Tombstone was fun as usual - we camped on our property, had dinner with friends in town and on the land. I did three book signings, gave one presentation, and did some research for the re-release of Taste of Tombstone (Spring 2008-Univ. New Mexico Press).

The former Tombstone Mayor, Andre DeJournett, opened the Tombstone Consolidated Mine tour about two months ago. It was awesome - anyone going to Tombstone must take it! It was like going back in time. We took lots of photos and one of them shows an orb with a face in it!!!

Tomorrow I leave for Deadwood, SD to film an episode of the Lost Worlds series for the History Channel. It should be lots of fun. More TV might be in my future, which we would be WAY cool. That's all I can say for now - I don't want to jinx myself.

I get back from Deadwood, stay home for two days, then head to Springfield, MO for the Western Writers of America conference. I am giving a presentation on how to research old records, and meeting with two of my publishers, and catching up with old friends.

After that, I am home for a month!

My new job at Interamark is still awesome. Great job, great boss, great people! It truly is a dream job - I get to write, while working from home, and get paid to do it.

Well, I have to get back to that awesome job since I am leaving tomorrow.

Interview

I just finished an interview with American Heritage.com - check it out: http://www.americanheritage.com/blog/20075_11_993.shtml. I can't seem to get the links to consistently work in this blog, so just copy and paste in into your address bar.

In addition to my speaking at the Western Writers of America conference (http://www.westernwriters.org/2007_convention.htm) in June (Springfield, MO), I will be giving a talk at the Women Writing the West ( http://www.womenwritingthewest.org/conference.html) conference in October (Colorado Springs). It's going to be a busy year, but that's a good thing.

Did I mention the University of New Mexico Press (current publisher) is going to reprint Taste of Tombstone? The cool thing is that it will be released on it's 10th anniversary of being published! I can't believe it's been 10 years since my very first book was published

Where does the time go?

I can't believe it's been almost a month since I last posted. I swear I am gonna do better. Let's see - I just found out that my 2nd book, Pikes Peak, was reprinted recently. That means anyone can order a copy now - it was out of print!

I am just about to send my 5th book about the pioneer women to my publisher. It should have gone to him long before now.

Made all the arrangements for my Tombstone trip for Wyatt Earp Days (Memorial weekend). Book signings at Boothill Graveyard, Tombstone Old West Books, and one in Tucson at a cool little cafe called, Javalinas.

I have another head cold this week...feels like I just had one.

Replanted the garden after losing everything in the weird frost we had last month. Tomatoes, pepper varieties, and leeks.

Well, I just got a new assignment, so I am going to dig in!
